Clinical Skills Nights

What are they?

The skills nights are 2-3 hour sessions which teach RAHMS members a range of clinical skills for later practice. They have become a staple of the RAHMS academic and social calendar. Due to popular demand we now offer one session each semester catering to 60 students. However even now we still have some excess demand – so be sure to get in quick when you see the announcements if you don’t want to miss out! Currently the nights are run in the laboratories of the Wallace Wurth building

Skills taught

We are lucky have a range of highly qualified medical, allied health and nursing staff who volunteer their time to come and teach.

  • Plastering – under the supervision of two local physiotherapists participants learn how to apply a simple cast to immobilise the forearm and wrist
  • Cannulation – using a model students learn how to canulate. Cannulas used are provided by BD medical and are the latest model!
  • Suturing – students are taught how to sew a basic suture using a pig’s trotter.
  • Blood pressure – Students will be taught how to take blood pressure using a sphygmometer. As part of this session other skills are sometimes taught.

The next skills night

  • Date – Thursday the 5th of August 2010
  • Where – Laboratories (202-204) on Level 2 of the Wallace Wurth Building
  • Time – 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Please try to be on time so you get the most time for all the activities.
  • What to bring – Lab coat (if you don’t want to get plaster all over yourself), gold coin donation (for the charity Life for Kids) and a desire to have fun!
  • If you can no longer make it – Please let Nathan know ASAP. We have a waiting list and it would be a shame if people missed out when they needn’t.
